With no formal vocal training and with a career already as solo cellist and theatre performer, Matthew created the title roles in Sir John Tavener’s Petra (Aldeburgh, City of London, Sydney and Toronto Festivals) and The Fool (Millenium Festival, SBC) and made his debut as Papageno at Opera North to significant critical and public acclaim:

'Matthew Sharp’s singing raised the evening to a pitch of spiritual feverishness rarely encountered in either concert hall or theatre.' Independent on Sunday on Petra

'Matthew Sharp’s performance in the central role displays consummate theatrical invention…a commanding vocal and stage presence.'
The Guardian on The Fool

'The show is stolen by Matthew Sharp’s wide-eyed Papageno…he displays a rare combination of vocal and comic talents.'
The Observer on Opera North’s
The Magic Flute

He then took time out to begin intensive vocal studies with Ulla Blom (Stockholm/London).

Recent vocal highlights include returning to Opera North for the title role in The Pied Piper (Pearson/Buckler) and The Lost Chord Project, Almeida Opera’s The Silent Twins (Wallen/de Angelis), performances with the RPO, LPO, Ural Philharmonic and Orchestra of the Swan, and appearances in recital at Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room, Salle Gaveau, Maly Hall (Ekaterinburg) and MusikMuseet (Stockholm).

Uniquely, his extensive recital activities now embrace both cello and song repertoire.
'I regard Matthew as an extraordinary individual and musician. He has given many performances of my music and has brought a rare level of commitment, artistry and poetic imagination to everything he has undertaken. He is not only superbly gifted but has a deep intelligence which he brings to his performances and which has been thrilling
to witness at close quarters. These qualities, together with an empathy and enthusiasm
that inspires and enhances the lives and performances of those around him, make him one of the UK's most special musicians.'
